Leaving on a Very Very Long Jet Plane

Two weeks from yesterday, we're flying to New Zealand and Australia.

I KNOW.  Crazy, right?  No, we did not suddenly strike gold (although, come to think of it, that'd be nice, too).  We each had some airline miles and we basically figured out the very furthest we could go with them in an effort to milk international travel with a lap baby as long as possible.  Yes, the flights will be miserable, but it'll be fun once we're there, right?  Right??

In any case, all this means that I'll mostly be away from the interwebs for a couple of weeks (as an aside, HUGE thanks to our wonderful parents who've offered to come house sit and stay in our place for most of the time, and to our fabulous neighbors from both next-door and the next-building-over for checking in on it, too).  But don't worry - I have some seriously awesome guest posters lined up (oooh, the suspense) and my only fear is that you won't want me back.

All this is to say that I need your HELP!  We hoping to travel pretty lightly, so I'd love any tips and suggestions from you.  The weather will probably be wet and coolish (50s and 60s) for most of the trip, with hopefully a few warmer days, as well.  I'd love your input on specific pieces/outfits.  Maybe I'll post pictures of a bunch of pieces I'm considering and let you pick?  Or maybe I'll do a linkup and have you share your favorite outfits while traveling?  What do you guys think?  Do you have other ideas on how I can best steal all your knowledge on fashionable travel?

  1. Light layers. Bring sweaters, tees, button-ups and cardigans that can all be used and mixed together. Also, I read somewhere to only pack 1 color scheme, so that all the pieces can be worn together. I thought it was a genius idea.

  2. Wow, what an awesome trip that will be! I'd love to go to Australia, but my flying fears prevent me from being on a plane that long! I like Erica's suggestion about to go with layers for your trip. :)

  3. I got this idea from my bff who is like a professional flyer, and it worked great for me! I bought a box of those huge freezer size zip lock bags and put whole outfits into each one. Top, Bottom, unmentionables. Anything I would wear with multiple outfits like jackets or jewelry went into it's own seperate bag. I was able to pack A TON of stuff! Anything that didn't go on a bag, like bulky jackets or soemthing, I rolled really tightly and packed in between bags. I'm telling ya, it saved my life! :) Have a wonderful time!!!!

  5. You are so so lucky!!!! I hope you have an amazing time! I think I would just pack a whole bunch of basics and then add lots of fun accessories to mix things up.
I never answered you before on where I lived in D.C. I worked in D.C., but lived across the river in Crystal City Virginia. I adore that entire area! Have a good weekend.

  6. Wow, I'm super jealous of your travel plans. I hope you'll be sharing a few photos from the trip? (Hint, hint. :))

I don't have much advice for packing in that weather. I'm used to dressing for English weather, where the question I asked myself each morning in the summer was whether the Yorkshire climate would be kind enough to not require me to stuff a cardigan UNDER my coat. (It usually didn't bother to be so accommodating.)

    Have fun!

  7. Sounds like fun! I've been to New Zealand once and enjoyed it, although I didn't get to look around much (was there to attend a convention). I don't have any packing advice, so I hope you share what you settle on doing ... :)

  8. Oh that will be so fun! I would pack lots of staples that can easily be mixed and matched with each other. Good luck packing!

  9. Sounds like a fun trip! I am not a travel expert at all, but Tania from What Would a Nerd Wear (so sad she has since stopped blogging) did a great post on packing. She did 8 pieces and created 8 outfits. Check it out: http://whatwouldanerdwear.blogspot.com/2012/02/8-outfits-1-very-small-suitcase.html
